FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii — The 402nd Army Field Support Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command and 25th Infantry Division are working together to provide Soldiers at Fort Shafter with fresh, affordable meals through the Culinary Outpost.
The mobile nutrition and convenience for our Soldiers.”
The Culinary Outpost serves Fort Shafter from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The truck generally operates near the Morale, Welfare and Recreation center, although its parking location may change based on installation requirements.
The rotating menu includes stir-fry bowls with a selection of proteins, spaghetti with meat sauce, submarine sandwiches, macaroni and cheese bowls, grill items and Holistic Health and Fitness-approved Pro Soldier Meals. A complete meal costs $7.10 and includes fruit or a salad, chips, a muffin and a ingredients, inspect the vehicle, account for equipment and supplies, and verify that the truck is ready before leaving for Fort Shafter.
Operating the Culinary Outpost also gives 92G culinary specialists experience outside a traditional dining facility. Soldiers work in small teams and gain experience in food preparation, menu development, inventory management, transportation, customer service and mission planning. Team members also complete driver training, fire marshal certification and propane safety training before operating the mobile kitchen.
The smaller team and mobile setting help culinary specialists practice skills that apply to field food service. They plan and execute each mission, manage personnel and equipment, and conduct after-action reviews to improve future operations.
The truck gives Soldiers at Fort Shafter an alternative to leaving the installation for lunch. This reduces travel time and provides access to a complete meal during demanding work and training schedules.
“Increased access to convenient, healthy meal options directly supports Soldier readiness by reducing food insecurity, improving daily nutrition and increasing morale during demanding training and duty schedules,” Quinones said.
Irizarry Rodriguez said Soldiers have responded positively to the cost and convenience of the meals.
“Soldiers appreciate having more meal options at a lower cost than current on-base food offerings, improving both convenience and affordability,” he said.
The Culinary Outpost is expected to continue serving Fort Shafter as the installation moves toward food modernization. The 402nd AFSB and its partners will continue evaluating future food service opportunities based on staffing, re
“Currently, the focus remains on maintaining high-quality service for Soldiers,” Quinones said. “As Army Food Service continues to develop new initiatives, the 402nd team will ensure Fort Shafter is considered for future opportunities, including potential vendor additions or service expansion.”
The effort provides Fort Shafter Soldiers with an additionalcal training. It also shows how coordination among Army organizations across the Pacific theater can place food service capabilities where Soldiers need them
